Computed tomography (CT), cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are largely used in the assessment of inflammatory and infectious diseases of the middle ear. Imaging is needed to evaluate the extent of the disease and to identify or rule out associated complications of acute and chronic otomastoiditis and of cholesteatomas. MRI can also confirm the diagnosis of cholesteatomatous otitis and identify cholesteatoma recurrence in postoperative follow-up. In this chapter the imaging appearance of acute and chronic otomastoiditis and of cholesteatomas and their complications will be highlighted.
