Assessment of the São Gonçalo Viaduct Project (RJ-104) Based on the Use of BIM (Building Information Modelling) Methodology

The technological advancements have significantly impacted Civil Engineering, and when effectively implemented can greatly enhance the professional practice. Among these innovations, Building Information Modelling (BIM) has emerged as a crucial methodology for the technical and organizational evolution of engineering projects. This study investigates the transition from traditional Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to BIM, using the São Gonçalo Viaduct as a case study. The workflow involves detailed modelling in Revit, incorporating parametric families, customized templates, materials, and project-specific components. An IFC file compliant with ISO 16739 is generated and imported into CSI Bridge for structural analysis, with iterative adjustments made in Revit as needed to ensure geometric and parametric consistency, thereby promoting interoperability across platforms. The results demonstrated that the integration of BIM with specialized tools and automated processes improves productivity, enhances information coordination, and minimizes rework. Furthermore, this investigation emphasizes the strategic relevance of BIM adoption in addressing contemporary challenges in Civil Engineering and advancing the sector’s technological development.
