Representation of Gandhāra as a Multireligious Place in Vita Apollonii by Philostratus
摘要
Philostratus in his Vita Apollonii presented Apollonius’ journey to India. One of the most famous motifs of this work was the description of the stay of this θεῖος ἀνήρ (as Philostratus presented him) with the king of Taxila (in Gandhāra), the otherwise unknown Phraotes. The aim of this paper is to examine the image of Gandhāra as a multireligious place based on its presentation in Philostratus’ work, together with the broad context of the creation of this work: the apologetic purpose of the work (it was written for Julia Domna), the sources on which the author based his account (as an educated rhetorician and sophist, Philostratus drew heavily on earlier literary descriptions), and the historical background of both Apollonius’ times (first century AD) and Philostratus’s times (third century AD).
