The paper analysed the digitisation of education as the use of modern information technology into educational methodologies to improve teaching and learning experiences. It involves the use of digital tools, resources, and platforms to enhance communication, teaching, learning, and assessment. The Metaverse is a groundbreaking instrument for the digitisation of education, enabling interactions among learners inside a virtual setting. The Metaverse is an immersive digital environment where users interact with their own avatars and those of others. The paper conceptualises the metaverse as having certain characteristics, including the Internet of Things, digital reality, and human–computer interaction, among others. It later classified metaverse technologies into four unique categories: virtual and augmented reality, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and digital twin. The study noted that the implications of the metaverse are many, particularly in its gradual erosion of the distinctions between virtual and real-life contexts. The metaverse has impacted education via several methods, including visualisation, the deterrence of academic dishonesty, immersive experiences, and customisation, among others. The advent of the metaverse in education has presented serious issues, notably substantial disruptions to ontological and epistemological underpinnings. Nevertheless, the paper demonstrated that the integration of the metaverse into the educational system offers various opportunities, such as the establishment of an immersive learning environment that engages all senses, the enhancement of the teaching process constrained solely by our imagination, and the facilitation of personalised education and collaborative work options, among others.
