The esophagus has a peculiar anatomy: it lacks a serosa layer and exclusive nerves or blood vessels; it crosses the neck, thorax and abdomen; and it is limited by sphincters. Esophageal anatomy cannot be understood apart from esophageal physiology. The study and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the antireflux barrier is essential for the correct diagnosis and treatment of diseases in this region, the center of most esophageal benign diseases.
