The Midlands Province contains at least 48 Zimbabwe-type settlements, with 19 described in this chapter. Situated on the Plateau’s highveld, the region features granite kopjes, dome outcrops, and a park-like landscape. It is a key watershed draining into the Shangani-Gwai and Runde-Save systems, with a mild, misty micro-climate and rich pastures. South of Gweru, the Shurugwi ranges and Great Dyke create a rugged terrain, while south-eastern trade winds generate a mild, misty micro-climate. Vegetation is dominated by Brachystegia and Julbernadia woodlands, with Acacia karoo, Combretum, and grasslands providing rich pastures. Despite decades of resistance by Towhwechipi Chibhamubhamu, the Changamire Rozvi fell in the mid-nineteenth century after Nguni upheavals in South Africa triggered migrations and attacks led by Ndebele leader Mzilikazi. The death of Towhwechipi Chibhamubhamu marks the end of the pre-colonial Shona state system and the 600-year Zimbabwe stone-building tradition.
