The Dismal Science of Grids
摘要
The Dismal Science of Grids compares the economics of renewables and nuclear. After examination of a typical electric bill, the narrative defines the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) and displays its components for fossil fuel, renewable, and nuclear energy. The transition from vertically integrated utilities to competitive markets is then described and the operations of the energy, ancillary services, and capacity markets are detailed. The chapter shows direct costs of building and operating wind and solar plants are less than those of nuclear reactors. However, with systems costs for backup power, transmission lines, and more included, nuclear power is more economical.
