Our Fossil Fueled Legacy traces coal’s use from seventeenth-century England to the present, emphasizing its powering the industrial revolution and its environmental impacts. How combustion of fossil fuels—coal, oil, and methane—caused climate change is then examined. The goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050 is discussed and the question raised as to whether renewables or nuclear should play the larger role in curbing climate change. Graphs of worldwide fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions illustrate the narrative. The conclusion is drawn that decarbonization of electricity production must take priority, followed by electrification of other economic sectors.
