Cultural Diversity under Attack in a Time of Anti-globalisation
摘要
In this chapter perceptions of cultural diversity are examined in a time where in many parts of the world, governments seem intent on undoing the social justice advancements we have seen over the past half century. The extent to which elements of globalisation may account for this setback is considered. In reviewing various definitions of globalisation, I connect its economic aspects with a form of neo-colonialism. The promises of a brighter more prosperous world under neoliberal globalisation have in many cases not materialized leaving people angry and desperate, easy victims of demagogues promising simple solutions. The results have seen democracy in retreat and human rights and freedoms threatened as well as a growing divisiveness in society. In these difficult times, comparative educators can play an important role to combat the reactionary and regressive policies being put into place.
