Artificial Intelligence in 3D Concrete Printing: A Review of Applications, Integration and Future Prospects

Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerged as a transformative element across multiple industries such as manufacturing, construction, healthcare, and finance. The ability of AI to detect patterns and analyze large datasets enables businesses to achieve informed decisions that create new opportunities for process improvement. The construction industry has made significant progress through 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) which employs a layer-by-layer additive manufacturing method to automate the production of complex concrete structures without needing traditional formwork. 3DCP provides benefits through reduced material waste alongside faster completion times and expanded design flexibility. This technology presents challenges related to maintaining geometric accuracy along with managing process control and material behavior while ensuring structural integrity. The paper evaluates the implementation of AI technologies in 3DCP to overcome identified challenges and achieve its maximum capabilities. The paper demonstrates AI's role in improving 3DCP operations through mix design optimization and real-time process monitoring along with structural and path planning and automated quality control. The research examines how Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) support the development of intelligent and responsive control systems for advanced printing technologies. This review examines current applications and future possibilities of AI in 3DCP to deliver essential insights that promote autonomous and intelligent construction practices.
