As discussed in Chapter 3, translation beliefs refer to the beliefs held by members of a language community regarding translation. For one thing, translation beliefs can be directly found in management and practices through the use of words like “understand”, “value”, “believe”, “consider”, “hold”, etc. For another, beliefs can be inferred from management and practices, as they are often implicit and difficult to identify. Thus, when discussing implicit beliefs, researchers often use words such as “assume”, “presume”, “infer”, “reflect”, “imply” etc. Likewise, it is admitted that several beliefs may coexist, even contradicting each other.
