Judges Juvenal and Chartier formally opened the trial in Rouen in the archbishop’s palace (the archbishop of Rouen, Estouteville, played no role). The Arc advocate, Dean Maugier, gave another elaborate but still distorted defense of Joan. But then the case was put on an accurate course when Guillaume Prévosteau took over as the proctor of the Arc plaintiffs and gave an oral presentation of his libellus, outlining the procedural defects of the trial, refuting the charges against Joan, and explaining the role of the English adversaries. Guillaume Manchon and the other two original notaries of Joan’s trial pledged their cooperation, and the French and Latin records of the trial were placed in evidence. Inquisitor Bréhal was taken on as one of the judges, as required by the papal commission. Cauchon’s grandnephew appeared in court, to renounce all responsibility for the trial on behalf of all of Cauchon’s heirs. A search was ordered for Cauchon’s original investigations, and, because nothing was found, new investigations were set under way.

摘要
