Design of a Tool for the Sizing and Economic Valuation of the Components of Mini-hydroelectric Power Plants

This paper tackles the study towards sizing and economical valuation of small hydropower plants. A tool has been designed to evaluate in size and cost mini-hydroelectric power plants, for both cases of refurbishment and new construction. Beginning with an introduction where precedents are addressed, fundaments of small hydropower and methods for sizing evaluation and economical valuation are explained. In light of the foregoing, a tool is implemented, from this point forward called MHTOOL, which allows the user to evaluate all the elements built in small hydropower plants, in size and power. Furthermore, the tool offers a complete cost study in which we can choose whether we prefer refurbishment or new construction. Additionally, it provides the user a hydrological and power study of the power plant. At the end of this paper, a study case is proposed.
