These copingcopingcope methods roughly fit into two areas: external resources and internal resources. External resources can be described as resources accessible to Black women that they could draw upon during difficulties; this included support of familyfamily and friends, and their childrenchildren who became a motivational force to get through their imprisonment. The internal resources varied depending on sentence length, closed or open conditions, and experiences with the Offender Management Unit (OMU)Offender Management Unit (OMU). This chapter draws on internal resources, such as letting things go and not letting negative interactions or outcomes affect them. These strategies directly align with the Impression Management (IMIM)Impression Management (IM) Black women employ, and so this chapter provides the behind the scenes copingcopingcope skills used to uphold their self-presentation in the face of adversity.
