This chapter introduces you to the identityIdentity treesIdentity treetreeidentity tree task. This task was conducted during two focus groupsfocus group to get a deeper understanding of the women’s experiences prior to imprisonment that linked to their sex, gender, and race. Imprisonment is only one piece of the puzzle. Understanding what these women have already endured provides a deeper insight into their existing traumastrauma and their resilienceresilience strategies. This chapter begins with my identity tree example. Following this, the women’s identity trees are discussed in detail, highlighting commonalities between the women’s experiences. The women’s experiences are organised around the tree’s main components: the base and tree trunk, branches, leaves, and a compost heapcompost heap. After each tree component there will be a picture collage of some of the trees being discussed. This allows you as the reader to see the words written by these women. Their written words act as a reminder that these women are real individuals with actual lived experiences and not just data subjects. To conclude, this chapter discusses a few themes that the women talked about as a group, such as a learned culture of putting men on a pedestal, intimate relationships and being hypersexualised as a Black woman.
