Unavoidable deaths happen in any NICU and impact everyone involved. The circumstances around the death can be different from one case to another. Some happen within hours or days after birth, and others happen after few months of being in the NICU. As unfortunate these events are, they provide experience to the staff on how to handle similar situations in the future. Sometimes there is a silver lining to what happened. Supporting the families and the staff after such events helps the healing process and the recovery that everyone needs to continue doing their job.
