Manual wheelchairs are an essential mobility aid for people with disabilities, allowing them to move around and perform daily activities. However, in many parts of the world, including Somalia, manual wheelchairs are the only option available to people with disabilities, which can limit their independence and mobility. This project aimed to enhance the functionality of manual wheelchairs in Somalia by adding features that would improve the user's experience. We identified key areas for improvement and implemented innovative solutions to address them. These solutions included a shed to protect the user from the elements, an emergency helping system in case of an accident or emergency, and a control for the wheelchair that could be easily operated by the user. Additionally, the team worked within a reasonable budget to ensure that the project was financially feasible. Most of the results of the project were positive, with the added features significantly improving the overall functionality of the manual wheelchair. The shed provided protection from rain and sun, while the emergency helping system provided peace of mind for users and caregivers. The control for the wheelchair made it easier for users to operate the device, improving their mobility and independence. The project serves as a model for how to make meaningful improvements to assistive devices while working within a reasonable budget. Overall, the project contributes to the ongoing effort to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities in Somalia.
