Civil engineering has been one of the most consequential disciplines since the beginning of recorded time. Civil engineering is crucial to the development of any society, it is a vast and ever-evolving field that needs not be left out when it comes to the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. Whether artificial intelligence benefits and harms education has always been a topic of great controversy. The learning and teaching aspects significantly influence industry, hence, the need for this study. This study aims to understand the advantages and disadvantages of AI in the academic aspect of civil engineering. Data obtained from 133 respondents involved in civil engineering education were analysed in order to understand trends and a practical overview of the research subject. Data collection was done using a google form shared across various university chat platforms and the data was cleaned in order to ensure accuracy. It was found that AI has indeed shaped the nature of academic work, ultimately, there is a lot of room for AI in the academic environment. There were however some concerns such as the reduction in problem-solving skills of students, usage regulation, plagiarism and academic misconduct. An interesting 72% of the respondents are of the opinion that AI use in academic work should not be discouraged and strictly regulated. AI is revolutionizing education and redefining traditional practices across disciplines; we recommend that this study be repeated for other academic fields.
