In reality, academic psychology is structurally conservative. It is rooted in a doctrine of individuocentrism: focusing on studying individual in isolation while ignoring broader social and political contexts. This approach inherently supports the status quo, promoting system-justification and victim-blaming. These approaches have emerged historically, with mainstream psychology rooted in conservative traditions like Christian theology, colonialism, and White supremacy, and continuing to be embedded in neoliberal, capitalist frameworks. Its methods and practices often reinforce existing power hierarchies rather than challenge them. The majority of psychologists are politically quiet, prioritising career advancement over social change. The accusation of liberal bias is itself a culture war tactic that obscures psychology’s actual conservative foundations and functions.
