The persistent claim of a liberal bias in psychology is overstated and driven by several factors. The myth thrives due to cognitive biases like the availability heuristic, the vague and pejorative use of the term ‘liberal’ in certain political contexts (especially in the United States), and the strategic political rewards that are to be gained from attacking academia. This manufactured crisis ultimately serves to discredit and disempower experts, undermining public discourse on important issues. Most psychologists (and most academics generally) are politically moderate, and the focus on a few controversial examples ignores the vast majority of conventional, apolitical work.
