Conservatives often accuse psychology of having a liberal bias, claiming it undermines the field’s scientific rigor. However, this critique overlooks psychology’s inherent methodological weaknesses, such as small samples and low replicability, which make its findings inherently uncertain and open to interpretation from any political angle. The conservative stance promotes a false certainty, equating its own views with rationality and science while dismissing liberalism as emotional. Yet true scientific scepticism, which challenges authority and embraces change, aligns more naturally with liberal values. The field’s lack of robustness may stem not from excessive liberalism, but from an institutional conservatism that is resistant to the sceptical, self-correcting processes essential to good science.
