Example #5: By ‘Othering’ Ethnic Minorities
摘要
Psychology’s focus on individual happiness and well-being serves to characterise marginalised people as responsible for their own distress, and downplay the need for society as a whole to address their marginalisation through societal change. This individuocentric view ignores structural issues such as racism and reduces complex social harms to problems of individual prejudice. The field’s reductionist methods further homogenise diverse cultural identities by framing them in terms of simplistic categories, by centring Whiteness as the default for psychology, and by rendering non-White experiences invisible or aberrant. Psychology’s practices—from biased psychometric tests to Eurocentric publishing conventions—serve to reinforce conservative, anti-progressive narratives about race, contradicting claims that psychology is overwhelmed by liberal bias.
