Money, unlike food and water, is a social construct, not a biological necessity for human survival. The common belief that wealth accumulation is a natural human impulse is questionable. It is likely a byproduct of social conformity, and a circumstantial need whereby human beings are obligated by the economic system they happen to be born into to seek money in order to survive. The belief that wealth accumulation is a ‘natural’ human impulse then leads to capitalist realism, the belief that capitalism is the only viable economic system. However, this idea is a myth, as history shows many alternative systems have existed and continue to exist worldwide, all of which contradict the notion that capitalism is an inevitable expression of human nature.
