This chapter describes “The Transition to a Sedentary Life” as gradual process rather than a finished state. Technological innovations such as horticulture and herding not only allowed for more settled ways of life but also for semi-nomadic life-styles. The chapter further discusses—among other things—the increasing importance of gender in social classification, communal feasts as a form of circulation and as a sociable way to dispose surplus and, finally, the cultural practice of trophy-taking, which lives on in contemporary sports trophies and touristic souvenirs.

摘要

This chapter describes “The Transition to a Sedentary Life” as gradual process rather than a finished state. Technological innovations such as horticulture and herding not only allowed for more settled ways of life but also for semi-nomadic life-styles. The chapter further discusses—among other things—the increasing importance of gender in social classification, communal feasts as a form of circulation and as a sociable way to dispose surplus and, finally, the cultural practice of trophy-taking, which lives on in contemporary sports trophies and touristic souvenirs.
