Scholarly journals used, for several centuries, to be an important tool for the dissemination of reliable scientific information. This role has changed in the past few decades with the sudden booming of new (so-called predatory) journals that do hardly—if at all—check the scientific reliability and usefulness of the submitted manuscripts but rather are aimed at optimizing profits by asking article processing charges from the authors. It appears difficult for both authors and readers to distinguish between true scholarly and predatory journals. The possible confusion is deliberately increased by predatory publishers by choosing titles that are very similar to—and not rarely even the same as—the titles of recognized scholarly journals. A result is that dozens of journals in specific disciplines have comparable titles. A step-by-step elimination procedure can help to sort out the reputable, trustworthy journals.
