Caio Mourão, the Lord of Metals
摘要
Caio Mourão built his jewelry poetics in tune with the concepts expressed in works by artists who were part of the Brazilian avant-garde of the 1960s. He elevated the perception of jewelry to art and stood out on the national and international scene. Mourão investigated subjects ranging from medieval alchemy and astrology to religion, mysticism, and many others, integrating traditional goldsmithing practices with contemporary procedures and methodologies, conceiving unique adornments designed to interact with the body. His production aimed at challenging the meaning of jewelry, suppressing the paradigm of preciousness, and reviving historical values. A visionary for his time, Mourão was already expressing his concern for environmental preservation by questioning the conventional use of materials traditionally regarded as precious in jewelry while highlighting the countless possibilities that alternative materials could offer. Cosmogonic and mythical, Caio Mourão viewed fire as an alchemical agent for transforming metals, while silver was perceived as lunar and feminine. The interconnection of these and other values composed the parameters implemented in his work and resulted in the beginning of a new calligraphy in Brazilian jewelry.
