 The Introduction provides an overview of the topics and issues covered in the volume such as the types of dance found throughout the MiddleEast region, how Islam influences attitudes towards dance and music in the region, issues of gender and sexuality, nationalism, and colonialism. A brief mention of the thorny issue of orientalism and how it affects Middle Eastern dance studies is also given. A brief overview of the current state of MENACA dance and music studies concludes this part of the Introduction. The last section briefly introduces the essays found in the book, and the references section provides a large number of readings for the interested reader.
