Public educationeducation in the United States has become an increasingly salient realm of contesting political and legislative perspectives. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’Ron DeSantis’ “Don’t Say Gay” Bill initiated a series of nationwide anti-LGBTQ+LGBTQ+ legislation. The bill, which is a regurgitation of past “No Promo Homo,” outlaws any discussions of gender or sexuality with students. Parents may file complaints if they suspect the law is in violation, creating a surveillancesurveillance apparatus in which they may act as extensions of State authority. As a result, educators have found their ability to support and care for students to be limited so as to avoid felony charges of violating the bill. Educators who are LGBTQ+ have also found themselves silenced. Transgender educators have been penalized for using titles and pronouns that reflect their gender identitygender identity. These laws mobilize disgust as a tool of power, invoking moral panic to justify the exclusion of LGBTQ+LGBTQ+ voices from public spaces. Although LGBTQ+ people are a protected class under Title IXTitle IX, these acts hope to push LGBTQ+ people out of public spaces like educationeducation and are right-wing attacks on expressions of gender and sexuality which do not align with right-wing cisheterosexual patriarchal Judeo-Christian values.
