Why Academia Needs Faculty and Leaders with LHS+ Lived Experiences

The Latina/o/x/e, Hispanic, and/or of Spanish origin (LHS+) community represents nearly 20% of residents in the USA and a unique population to be served by academic medicine and the healthcare system. This chapter explores the critical role LHS+ faculty and leaders at medical schools play in advancing culturally informed educational, research, clinical, and service activities for LHS+ community members. They also uniquely serve as role models, mentors, and change agents, to not only support greater LHS+ representation in the medical and academic medicine workforces but also ensure LHS+ content in the curricula, foster positive learning environments for LHS+ students, and provide culturally competent, safer healthcare for LHS+-identified patients. To achieve health equity for LHS+ communities, it is important to understand the barriers and facilitators to LHS+ faculty and leaders’ representation and advancement in academic medicine.
