Modelling and Simulation in Dental Education

Digital technologies have reshaped how we approach education, particularly in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and medical education. One of the most exciting developments in education is the use of simulations within Outcome-Based Education (OBE) frameworks. By blending theoretical knowledge with hands-on virtual experiences, simulations can make learning more engaging, meaningful, and effective for students. This chapter explores the interesting facts about how modelling and simulations can be integrated into dental education to create vibrant, student-focused learning environments that nurture critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. We outline how educators can align modelling and simulations to design curricula that incorporate virtual experiences and create assessment methods that measure both learning progress and final outcomes. Medical education, in particular, has seen a transformative impact through the use of simulations. Virtual patient simulations, surgical simulators, and anatomy visualisation tools provide medical students with opportunities to practise procedures, diagnose conditions, and develop clinical decision-making skills in a risk-free environment. These tools help to bridge the gap between theory and clinical practice, ensuring future healthcare professionals are better prepared to handle real-world medical scenarios. The integration of simulations in medical training also supports interprofessional education, enabling students from different healthcare disciplines to collaborate and improve patient care outcomes. In dental education, the integration of simulations has become an essential tool for enhancing psychomotor skills and clinical competencies. Dental procedures and clinical practice require accurate hand-eye coordination and systematic motor skills, making simulation-based learning a highly effective method to prepare students for real-world practice. Simulations in dentistry allow students to practise clinical procedures in a virtual or computer-aided environment before transitioning to real patients, reducing the risk of errors and improving their confidence. The clinical procedures and case studies presented in this chapter serve as a guide for institutions looking to implement simulation-based learning in their curricula and ensure that future dentistry professionals are equipped to meet the evolving demands of the healthcare industry.
