When the human body is not considered as a conflicting subjective issue and is dissociated from psychic life by way of ignoring the integrality of emotional human experience, clinical assessment is hindered and incomplete. Those who intend to modify their bodies by means of injecting substances haphazardly and recklessly are moved by ignorance and deep distortion of their body image and their somatic experience, which constitute the basis of personal identity and subjective ideals. Attempts to correct what is considered a deformed body or to compensate for supposedly failed corporal endowments can be rooted in serious pathology and function as manifestations of severe mental disorders and emotional suffering.
