Evolution of Augmentation Mammoplasty
摘要
There is no consensus on ideal breast size, as it varies depending upon personal preferences and culture-specific societal expectations for beauty. Since primitive times, breasts have been considered symbols of femininity, sexuality, and fertility. Among the techniques used to enhance breast volume, autologous tissue transplantation, injection of intramammary alloplastic materials, and preformed alloplastic implants have been the most commonly used. Neuber made the first clinical attempt to transplant fat in 1893. The introduction into the market of silicone prostheses in the early 1960s dramatically improved the results of breast augmentation. At that time, all other methods previously used for breast augmentation became obsolete.
