The use of biopolymers in aesthetic procedures in the Dominican Republic reflects a complex evolution marked by innovation, malpractice, and regulatory response. Initially introduced in the 1990s as a low-cost alternative for body enhancement, biopolymers gained rapid popularity due to high demand and lack of regulation. However, widespread complications including infections, granulomas, material migration, and tissue necrosis soon revealed the dangers of unapproved and improperly applied substances. The involvement of non-medical individuals and unlicensed clinics significantly worsened outcomes. In response, Dominican health authorities enforced strict bans, enhanced professional credentialing, and launched public education campaigns. This chapter outlines the history, commonly used substances, origins, complications, and legislative actions related to biopolymers in the Dominican Republic. It highlights the importance of qualified professionals, safe materials, and consistent oversight in aesthetic medicine. The Dominican experience serves as a critical case study for global health systems addressing similar aesthetic practices.
