This chapter presents the methodological means to capture and analyse my primary sources, that is, official speeches in 1869, 2007–2008, and 2014–2015. First, I present an overview of my case study and comparative methodologies. These derive from a problem-driven approach to better understand the meaning of three Ecuadorian lawgivers who, despite ideological differences, embody a series of similarities. I then discuss a Lacanian approach to the grip of ideology, with particular emphasis on the concepts of imaginary and symbolic identification, fantasy, and the theft of enjoyment thesis. These and other affective elements will be ‘captured’ through a rhetorical political analysis of constitutional instability in Ecuador. Lastly, I comment on the desirability and limitations of using psychoanalysis beyond the clinical setting.
