The stereotype of the typical football-loving Brazilian is of a macho, hypermasculine, cisgender, heterosexual man. For anyone who does not conform to these standards, the world of football is a hostile environment in which sexism and LGBTphobia are rife. This means that even the presence of lesbian, gay, bisexual, (LGBTQ+) people in football is constantly questioned and diminished. Yet, the representation of LGBTQ+ identities in the Brazilian media remains underexplored in academia. This chapter examines LGBTQ+ representation in Brazilian football media coverage, highlighting the hostile environment faced by players in the men’s game using as case studies the experiences of former male players Richarlyson and Emerson Ferretti, who both came out on a podcast focused on LGBTphobia in Brazilian football. These are contrasted with several examples of sports media coverage of LGBTQ+ players in women’s football to demonstrate how the representation of lesbian and bisexual women is more naturalised than for their gay male counterparts, although these representations are still immersed in the LGBTphobia and sexism of Brazilian society. The chapter shows that there is still a lot of stigma towards Brazilian footballers who challenge gender norms and that coming out, especially in the men’s game, can still lead to repercussions, which discourages many from taking that step.
