The foundation of this collection has been the understanding that sport journalism is required to navigate debates and often conflicting perspectives on how to address issues of equity, diversity and representation within both its content and its key institutions. In the conclusion to this collection, Fielding-Lloyd assembles the key themes that have been identified by the Sports, Media and Identity Network (SMIN) and represented throughout the central nine chapters. Those themes are (a) empathy, (b) language and (c) education. In each of these themes, the key issues needing to be addressed are explained. For instance, the importance of editorial decisions being informed by an empathy for the lived experience and realities of under-represented and marginalised identities is explored. Sport journalists’ apparent concerns regarding portraying such athletes with accurate and unharmful language are discussed, whilst the evolving need for educational efforts across the sport media industry is demonstrated. To address these key issues, the recommendations arising from chapters in this collection and SMIN for potential future research by scholars in the field are outlined, alongside recommendations for changes to industry practice. Crucially, it is argued that to realise its potential, future work needs to be a collaborative effort between sport media practitioners, researchers and policymakers. Such collaboration is exemplified by the way in which this collection has benefited from the involvement of both journalists and academics, and some with lived experience of the marginalised identities under discussion and is intended to support journalists and media professionals to envision alternatives that would promote positive change for a fair, informed and inclusive sport journalism.
