The Variety of Elements

The variety of elements refers to the wide range of chemical elements that exist, each defined by a unique number of protons in its atomic nucleus. These elements—formed during the early stages of the Universe and by nuclear processes within stars—differ in their physical and chemical properties, due to variations in their atomic structures. This diversity allows for the creation of countless compounds and materials essential to both natural processes and artificial (human-made) systems. In the presence of high energy, atoms bonded through a process known as “chemical evolution” or “prebiotic evolution,” forming simple organic and inorganic molecules, such as methane (CH4) and ammonia (NH3), laying the foundations for the emergence of life. In addition, Humanity has created synthetic substances from these elements—many of which do not decompose naturally and, thus, contribute to pollution, disrupting the function of natural ecosystems.
