The challenge of keeping learner motivation on a high level throughout a more extended learning period, for example, in acquiring a new complex skill or language, is a barrier for many learners and, therefore, companies. Especially if self-learning is a high percentage of the learning path in a company, fluctuations in motivation or having no one to train the new skill or language with are a difficulty to many. With the advance of generative AI, though, learner motivation can be improved by creating an individual, adaptive, and gamified learning buddy. In an experimental approach, the author developed a language learning game that uses gamification elements such as point systems, individual, motivational feedback, and customisable rewards to personalise and reinforce the learning process. A specific implementation of this approach was tested in the context of Swedish language learning, where it turned out that the proper configuration of the prompt is essential to effectively turning a large language model into a gamified conversational coach. Continuous development has refined the prompt and can help others develop their own learning games.
