‘Science in the darkroom?’ is a philosophical essay that discusses the use of ChatGPT in scientific context. A recall of what science means and its reliance on the overarching concept of knowledge is considered essential for assessing whether—and if so, how—ChatGPT should be used. With a reference back to Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, scientific practice is strictly distinguished from a mere reproduction practice, and the dangers of confusing the two are pointed out. Further references are made to the necessity of transparency in scientific discourse, the questions of authorship, the author’s ability to speak and maturity. The aim is to not lose sight of the important standards in scientific practice under the pressure of new technologies. Finally, the discussion will be used to derive recommendations for the use of AI in research and teaching.
