Different Methods and Routes of Administration of Hormonal Contraception
摘要
In 1957, combined hormonal contraception (CHC) was introduced as a new contraceptive possibility. In 1960, Enovid-10® (G D Searle Co., Skokie, IL, USA) has been launched in the United States as the first contraceptive ‘pill’. Since then, ‘The Pill’ has revolutionized family planning. For the first time, it gave women control over their own fertility. It has been estimated that 50 years later, about 200 million of women worldwide have been using hormonal contraception. Since, adherence has been facilitated by the introduction of parenteral forms of CHC. 65 years after the first pill, the safety of modern CHC has significantly increased and the side effects dramatically fallen. Non-contraceptive risks and benefits should be repected when a CHC is prescribed. This chapter discusses structural aspects, partial activities and the risks and benefits of the oestrogens and progestins used today in hormonal contraceptions as well as the actual clinical recommendations for the use of CHC.
