Hormonal contraceptives have contributed to women’s reproductive and sexual health globally. Through safe prescribing, healthcare professionals reduce their known possible cardiovascular and other health risks. Side effects on physical health like irregular bleeding, pain, androgenic skin effects, etc., are well known, and management is established. Less evidence is available about the impact of hormonal contraceptives on the individual quality of life of the user including mental and sexual health. This is due to the enormous variability of the subjective experience of the user with possible neutral, negative, and positive changes induced by hormonal contraceptives. But this subjective experience has important consequences regarding the decision to use hormonal contraceptives and the continuation or discontinuation of use. A model of individualized integration of mental and sexual health into contraceptive counseling and care is described.
