‘Allow Me to Explain Myself’: Co-producing Challenging Histories of Mental Health
摘要
Museums are considered to have many roles in contemporary society. This chapter explores historic and contemporary collecting and the representation of histories of mental health within museums across England. It considers the preservation of a fragile heritage and possible reinterpretations of current representations of this narrative. The chapter reports on doctoral research undertaken by the author to explore the museum encounter alongside individuals with lived experience of mental health conditions, in particular considering co-production in the museum. This research was shaped within an emancipatory methodology. The chapter considers the impact and challenges of current museum practice against the aspirations of heritage spaces and recognises that there is much scope for further research, in particular through co-production practice.
