Understanding Intersex in India: Ambiguity and Embodiment
摘要
This paper examines the lived experiences of Sara, a self-identified intersex person from Southern India. Borrowing from phenomenological anthropology and drawing upon Sara’s personal narratives, the study interrogates how her intersex embodiment challenges rigid binary constructions of sex and gender. Rather than viewing ambiguity as a problem to be “fixed”, this paper posits it as an inherent aspect of human existence. In demonstrating how social structures and cultural frameworks often fail to accommodate intersex identities, leading to discrimination and alienation, this paper further argues for a shift away from pathologizing intersex identities toward fostering a more inclusive society that embraces the complexity of human experience. Finally, through its focus on Sara’s embodied ambiguity within the specific cultural context of India, the paper argues that intersex is beyond what a biomedical definition of it could capture.
