Challenges and Barriers to Scaling Green Finance: Overcoming Policy, Market, and Climate Change Impediment
摘要
This chapter provides a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the scientific literature on green finance, explicitly focusing on the barriers that hinder its large-scale implementation. Drawing on data from the Web of Science database (2009–2025), the analysis highlights trends in publication volume, identifies influential authors, maps co-authorship networks, and explores thematic connections through keyword co-occurrence. The findings reveal that green finance has evolved from a marginal topic into a mature interdisciplinary field, centred on the intersection of sustainable investment, environmental policy, and financial innovation. Even though substantial progress can be observed, persistent issues such as “political constraints”, “market inefficiencies” and “climate risks” still reveal several structural challenges. Thus, approaches in the field emphasise the need for new regulations, stronger coordination between institutions, and innovative financial instruments, such as green bonds and ESG-focused investments. Thus, this research indicates new directions worth pursuing, especially regarding the integration of digital tools, but also for a better understanding of how human behaviour shapes green finance, for policymakers, researchers and financial professionals, highlighting the vital role that green finance plays in driving sustainability and addressing climate threats.
