The Historical Background
摘要
I present a brief exposition of historical facts that have the potential to explain parallels between Buddhism/Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. Though Sufi religion developed within its own Muslim tradition, like all religions, this tradition has been submitted to the dynamics of history. I present an account of Sufism’s possible “Dharmic” contacts, and address the place that Christianity has within this picture. After theorizing the meanings of “Eastern” and “Western” philosophies, the chapter draws historical links between Sufism, Hinduism, and Buddhism, and integrates Neoplatonism and Gnosticism into this account. Did Islam have contacts with Dharmic philosophies? Does Sufism represent a link between the Abrahamic and the Dharmic?
