A Synthesis of Vision, Practice, and Impact
摘要
This chapter offers a powerful synthesis of the ASPIRE programme’s philosophy, practice, and impact across three cohorts, framing it as a radical intervention into the UK’s inequitable doctoral education landscape. ASPIRE—rooted in compassionate pedagogy, Ubuntu, and Omoluabi—emerged as a response to the systemic exclusion of Black students from postgraduate research, reimagining access through holistic, culturally responsive mentorship and support. The chapter reflects on the programme’s foundational Theory of Change, five interlocking pillars, and personalised mentorship model, all of which combine to cultivate academic readiness, emotional well-being, and leadership capacity. ASPIRE’s reflective and evaluative practices are shown to catalyse institutional transformation, influence national policy, and inspire community-led change beyond academia. By confronting the hidden curriculum, racialised barriers, and deficit narratives, ASPIRE enables scholars to reclaim space and agency within doctoral education. It also empowers mentors and institutions to co-create equitable environments that honour lived experience and challenge exclusionary norms. This chapter concludes by positioning ASPIRE as more than a programme—it is a scalable, values-driven movement that invites higher education to lead with compassion, justice, and courage in reimagining doctoral education for a more inclusive future.
