Reflective Learning and Well-Being: ASPIRE’s Pathway to Belonging and Resilience
摘要
This chapter explores how the ASPIRE programme integrates reflective learning and well-being as core strategies for fostering belonging, resilience, and academic success among Black students in higher education. Recognising that systemic racism, cultural alienation, and mental health challenges disproportionately impact Black scholars, ASPIRE adopts a holistic approach that centres emotional well-being, self-authorship, and community. Through structured reflective practices such as PebblePad journaling and group discussions, students engage in critical self-inquiry and personal growth aligned with Kolb’s experiential learning cycle. Weekly reflections, mindfulness sessions, peer networks, and one-on-one counselling contribute to an affirming educational environment. ASPIRE’s well-being framework goes beyond individual coping strategies to challenge institutional norms and promote cultural validation. Culturally responsive mentorship and cohort-based community building further strengthen scholars’ sense of belonging and identity within academia. By embedding well-being and reflective learning into its academic architecture, ASPIRE disrupts deficit-based models and provides a transformative blueprint for equity-focused institutional change. This chapter positions ASPIRE as an exemplar of inclusive practice, where student flourishing is inseparable from emotional support and cultural affirmation. It sets the stage for the next chapter, which deepens the programme’s anti-racist ethos through the ASPIRE Talk About Race Forum.
