This chapter discusses VoxLens, a novel verbal interaction technique for screen-reader users to interact with and extract information from online data visualizations using voice-activated commands. VoxLens is a multimodal open-source JavaScript plug-in that—with a single line of code—improves the information extraction experiences of screen-reader users with online data visualizations. First, the overall design of VoxLens is presented. Then, the VoxLens versions for simple data visualizations, complex data visualizations, and uncertainty in data visualizations are examined via their respective formative studies, engineering efforts, and performance evaluation. Additionally, this chapter provides a detailed account of scenarios when verbal interaction techniques can benefit users and when they should be avoided. The chapter concludes with exercises for readers to gain first-hand experience of verbal interactions.
