This chapter analyzes how the Dawoodi Bohra restoration of al-Jāmiʿ al-Anwar became a key case study in global heritage debates. It explores the conflict between international experts, who prioritized age-value and material preservation, and the Bohras, who focused on restoring the building’s religious function and Fatimid architectural coherence. The debate was further complicated by orientalist assumptions and identity politics related to the Bohras’ minority status. The chapter concludes that the restoration, championed by architect Hassan Fathy, opened a crucial conversation about the limitations of universal conservation values and the need for more inclusive heritage frameworks.
