Election watchers were shocked by the dramatic gains President Donald J. Trump made in heavily Latino in south Texas counties between 2016 and 2020 despite the hostility projected by President Trump towards Mexican immigrants and Mexican Americans. Trump’s strong performance foreshadowed 2022 Republican victories by Mayra Flores in a special election for Texas’s 34th District seat and Monica De La Cruz in Texas’s 15th District. Although Vicente Gonzalez recaptured the 34th district seat for Democrats in the 2022 general election, the developments signaled that Latinos in south Texas were embracing the GOP after a long period of Democratic dominance. The Republican Party also strategically recruited women of color for the first time. The 2024 election season brought rematches in both districts as Michelle Vallejo attempted to topple De La Cruz in the 15th and Flores sought to retake the 34th. Underlying the competition rested two burning questions: Have Latinos in south Texas continued to drift toward the Republican Party? And would Latina Republicans be able to ride Trump’s coattails on his return to the ballot?
